GYHA Mite Welcome Session and Placements Process 2015-2016

Dear Mite Parents -

GYHA wanted to reach out to you to clarify our plans for the upcoming Geauga Hockey "Welcome Session" and ongoing "placement" process for Mites for 2015-16 season.

The April 20th session will be a "Welcome to Geauga Hockey" like last year.  During that session we will run skills/drills and also scrimmage like a higher level group tryout but mainly in order to allow parents to see how there kid(s) would fit in with the Geauga Mites.  At that session, we will explain our expectation of what level of skating/hockey skill we expect new players to be able to demonstrate to be a Mite at Geauga - which is focused mainly on skating skills, .

This will also offer us an opportunity to deliver information on summer Pond Hockey programs to help players with those skills in preparation for the true "placement" sessions that will take place throughout August and September.

If you have any questions, please contact Paul Chase (chasepr4668@hotmail.com) or Chris Murphy (christopher.m.murphy@bankofamerica.com)

Thanks, GYHA Board

Ohio Hockey Project 2015 Summer Camps

Ohio Hockey Project Flyer

A message from GYHA's skills coach - Russ Sinkewich:

Click here for flyer: OHP Training Overview

I just wanted to shoot out a quick email about what options are available this summer with the Ohio Hockey Project. If you could please take the time to forward our information to your team it would be greatly appreciated. The new website went live last week and spots are already filling up quickly. We will be making an official press release to the Cleveland hockey community later next week, but I wanted to make sure your families were taken care of, should they be interested. We anticipate selling out of our camps & leagues again this year, so please book quickly to reserve your spot!

Below I've highlighted the core of what our 2015 line-up consists of:

•   Youth Development Leagues for Peewees and Squirts. These Development Leagues are located conveniently on each side of the city (Winterhurst & Gilmour). We combine high intensity weekly skill sessions with an alternating schedule of OHP coached games. This takes place throughout an 8-week period.

•   Goaltending Training Camps will add a very technical dimension for the goaltenders of the Project.

•   Mite/Squirt/Peewee/Bantam Training Camps are week-long and are the real deal. This total hockey experience combines, high quality coaching, committed skill development, off-ice performance training, and valuable off-ice life enhancement sessions where we focus on nutrition, injury prevention, goal setting, and self-marketing for our elder players.

•   Midget Minor/“JV” Development League will be the perfect springboard for the 8th, 9th, or 10th grader preparing to make the jump to Midget or Varsity level hockey! This 8-week long program meets once a week and combines high intensity team-based practices, OHP coached games, and performance training!

•   Female Training Group. Don’t worry ladies, we haven’t forgotten about you! This Saturday morning training group will meet once per week where we will have a heavy emphasis on individualized skill development, with off-ice performance training weekly.

Additional details and enrollment can be found online at

Ohio Hockey Project

Early Bird Discount: Enroll before March 15th and save 10% on all programs.

Gettin’ After It Discount: Enroll in more than one program, and you can take an additional 10% off.

Family Discount: families enrolling multiple athletes can save an additional 10% off.

I know the demand for quality ice time in the offseason and I wanted to make sure your families were not only taken care of first, but were aware of the resources we offer. Should you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me directly at   or by phone at 440-503-3432

The Pond Ice Arena Announces Hiring of New Hockey Director

John Mihalik

All - GYHA would like to welcome John Mihalik to The Pond and look forward to working with him to further develop hockey for the Geauga area kids!!

See the press release:

"The Pond Ice Arena Announces Hiring of New Hockey Director

Auburn, Ohio, January 26- The Pond Ice Arena announces the hiring of John Mihalik as the

arena’s Director of Hockey, overseeing all youth hockey programming and hockey related summer camps.

Mihalik comes to The Pond from Miami University (Oxford, Oh) where he was the Assistant

Director of Programming/Hockey since 2011. Mihalik also served as Head Coach of Miami

University Men’s Ice Hockey Team (ACHA Division II).

Mihalik is a 2011 graduate of Kent State University with an MS in Sport Studies, a concentration

Athletic Coaching and Sport Administration a BS in Sport Management.

The Pond owner, Elisa Nash, is excited about having Mihalik as Hockey Director. She says “Our

program has been run by hockey Hall of Famer Andre Lacroix for ten years, who will continue to

stay on our team here. Andre has been so amazing as he’s built all our hockey programs from scratch

into what they are today. Needless to say, tough shoes to fill, so I feel fortunate to have someone

with John’s experience join us.”

The Pond Ice Arena is home to five area High School Hockey Teams; Aurora, Chagrin Falls,

Kenston, Orange, University School, as well as The Geauga Maple Leafs, part of the Geauga

Youth Hockey Association and the Chagrin Valley Figure Skating Club. Mihalik will take over

the reins from Andre Lacroix in February. Lacroix will continue to be an integral part of the daily

administrative activities at The Pond as well Head Coach to University School Varsity Ice Hockey

The community is invited to TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE on February 21st 3:10-4:10, presented by

The Pond and Geauga Youth Hockey Association and to meet John Mihalik from 3-5PM.

The Pond Ice Arena is locally owned and operated by Elisa and Jim Nash, and family Chris,

Spencer and Cooper. The Pond offers family friendly recreational and developmental programming

for both figure skating and hockey and is known for their birthday parties and special events. The

Geauga Goalie Skills Clinics!!!

GYHA Goalie Skills Clinics

In case you didn't know....on top of our GYHA player skills sessions with Russ Sinkewich and The Ohio Hockey Project, we have also been holding special Goalie Skills Clinics over the 2014-15 year.  These sessions have been a great success and we've really created a "goalie family" by bringing our goalies together for specialized practices.

It is very important to give our goalies specific goalie skills instruction, individually and as a group, while also having their team coaches present to help reinforce those lessons in team practices and games.  It is also essential to give players who want to try the goalie position a venue to learn the basics in a solid learning environment and our clinics help create that opportunity. We have many sets of goalie equipment that have been donated throughout the years and therefore GYHA can equip most any goalie at any age!!  Thank you to our members, past and present, who have donated.

All of our skills clinics were in response to the GYHA end-of-year survey sent to our membership after the 2013-14 season. We have always had skills sessions but it was obvious our membership wanted more.  This year we have actively sought to formalize these and will continue evolve the Geauga's skills programs going forward to give our players as much of an opportunity to hone specific skills outside of normal practice times.

Thank you to Adam Snyder, our Squirt 2 Head Coach and former University School goalie for his hard work helping and as well, we thank Paul Chase, our Mite Blue Head coach and current St. Ignatius goalie coach for his help.  Of course, since we request all of our coaches to be available to participate, we thank them for their extra time!

Good luck!

Dan Aerni - President, GYHA

Go Leafs!
